Guidelines for Shipping Injection Molds to Fiesta Plastics
Preparation of the Mold(s) for shipment:
• Molds should be cleaned and lubricated with rust inhibitor prior to shipment. A representative full shot of the plastic parts and the runner system should be included with the mold along with notation of any repair work required or recently performed on the mold.
• Mold Palletizing or Crating: At a minimum, the mold should be securely strapped to a wooden pallet with metal strapping, and wrapped with shrink wrap. For additional protection, the mold may be fully enclosed in a wooden crate constructed around the palletized mold.
• Large molds in excess of 5,000 pounds will need to be split in half and palletized in two sections to facilitate loading and unloading from the truck. This will depend on the fork-truck load capacities at the shipping point and the destination, and any transfer points in between.
• Insurance: the owner of the mold should inquire with their insurance carrier and the shipper regarding the replacement value of the mold and obtain adequate insurance to cover the mold during transit.
• Commercial Issues: The owner of the mold will need to establish the terms of settlement with the old vendor regarding payment terms for molded parts, resin, colorant, packaging etc. to secure release of the mold and achieve a smooth transaction.
Shipping the Mold(s):
• The trucker must be informed of the mold weights and the details of the shipping instructions. An itemized bill of lading must be prepared and signed for by the trucker upon loading.
• For safety reasons, the palletized molds are to be floor-loaded only.
• The palletized molds should be strapped and secured with tie-downs to minimize movement within the trailer. The molds will generally be loaded in the nose of the truck to minimize sliding during deceleration.
• If Fiesta Plastics is to pick up a mold from its current location, the customer must supply a Letter of Authorization certifying Fiesta Plastics as an authorized agent to pick up the mold along with appropriate contact and address information.
